PowerToys setup: official install and privacy checks

Basic check order

1. Confirm the device meets Microsoft's current minimum: Windows 11 or Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer, a 64-bit x64 or ARM64 processor, and the Edge WebView2 Runtime installed by setup when needed.
2. Start from Microsoft Learn. Microsoft currently recommends its GitHub Releases page or Microsoft Store; WinGet and other package-manager methods are alternatives only when the package identity and workplace policy are clear.
3. Choose per-user installation for one Windows profile or machine-wide installation for all users. Check the architecture, stable versus preview channel, publisher, release notes, and vendor-published SHA-256 values before using a GitHub asset.
4. Open PowerToys Settings before enabling everything. Turn on only the utilities you need, review startup and automatic-update behavior, resolve shortcut conflicts, and save a settings backup before a broad configuration change.
5. Keep PowerToys at normal user privilege unless one named task must interact with an elevated app. Microsoft warns that always running an app as administrator increases security exposure.
6. Review each data path separately: clipboard history and previews, optional cloud AI providers and API keys in Advanced Paste, shared clipboard and file transfer in Mouse Without Borders, diagnostic packages, registry or hosts-file edits, and any workplace Group Policy restriction.
7. After setup, test one workflow at a time. If a shortcut, window action, paste operation, or cross-PC connection fails, disable the relevant utility, check elevation mismatch and conflicts, update through the official channel, and use Microsoft's utility-specific documentation before reinstalling.

Cautions and operating tips

• The stable release shown on Microsoft's GitHub Releases page was v0.100.2 when this guide was checked on August 15, 2026; preview builds were also listed. Treat the release page as the current source instead of pinning an old installer from a tutorial.
• Advanced Paste performs its standard format conversion, local OCR, and media transcoding on the PC. Its optional AI feature can use a configured cloud provider with an API key or a local model, so decide which mode is permitted before placing confidential clipboard content into that workflow.
• Mouse Without Borders can share keyboard and mouse control, clipboard data, and files across connected PCs. Service mode can control elevated apps or the lock screen, but Microsoft's documentation explicitly warns that the added control creates extra security risk.
• PowerToys is a collection, not one indivisible feature. Windows Snap layouts may replace FancyZones for simple tiling; Windows search may be enough instead of PowerToys Run; File Explorer or approved scripts may cover occasional renaming; and separate tools such as Everything, ShareX, AutoHotkey, or Flow Launcher should be evaluated only when their narrower purpose justifies another install.
• Do not send API keys, clipboard samples, host names, security keys, diagnostic archives, registry exports, customer file names, or screenshots containing private windows in a public correction request. Public Microsoft documentation URLs and redacted version/OS details are usually enough.
