LibreOffice install, format, macro, and recovery safety
Install current LibreOffice from project-controlled routes, match Windows, macOS, or Linux prerequisites, protect document compatibility and backups, review macros and extensions, and recover from launch failures without risking originals.
Basic check order
- Start at libreoffice.org/download and choose a release, operating system, processor architecture, language, and package type on that project-controlled page. On the visible checked date, it presented LibreOffice 26.8.0 as the latest stable release and 26.2.6 as another maintained choice, with separate Windows x86-64 and ARM64, macOS Apple-silicon and Intel, and Linux RPM and DEB routes. Re-check the page before installation because release numbers and package availability change; avoid search advertisements, copied direct links, generic office-suite bundles, and similarly named unofficial download sites.
- Confirm the platform requirements before replacing an existing office suite. The Document Foundation currently lists Windows 10 or 11 and Windows Server 2012 through 2022, macOS 11 or newer on Intel or Apple silicon, and Linux kernel 4.18 with glibc 2.27 or newer for its builds. It recommends the distribution's own installation method for ordinary Linux use and notes that administrator rights are needed for Windows installation. Back up documents, templates, dictionaries, macros, and configuration before an upgrade or removal, and keep the previous approved installer or package state until representative files pass review.
- Choose the package channel and optional components deliberately. Match x86-64 versus ARM64 on Windows, Intel versus Apple silicon on macOS, and RPM versus DEB or the maintained distribution route on Linux. Add a language pack or offline help only when needed. Java is not required for most LibreOffice work, but the official requirements call it out for features including Base; when Java is needed, LibreOffice Help says its architecture must match the office build. Do not install an unrelated runtime bundle or change JAVA_HOME merely because one document fails to open.
- Protect editable originals and make format decisions before team-wide adoption. LibreOffice can open and save DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and older Microsoft formats, but its help also says Microsoft VBA and LibreOffice Basic do not generally run the same code. Keep the received file unchanged, edit a copy, preserve an ODF master when LibreOffice-specific structure matters, and save a separate delivery copy in the recipient's required format. Reopen the exported file in the destination application and inspect pagination, fonts, fields, formulas, charts, comments, tracked changes, macros, and print or PDF output before replacing the original.
- Treat extensions, macros, templates, and signed documents as separate trust decisions. LibreOffice extensions can contain compiled UNO components, configuration, Basic libraries, dialogs, and other executable behavior; the Extension Manager distinguishes current-user, shared, and bundled scope. Verify the publisher, official project route, supported LibreOffice version, operating system, architecture, license, update path, and removal plan before installing an OXT. Keep macro security enabled, inspect the sender and purpose, and do not add a broad trusted location simply to silence a warning.
- Plan saves, backups, PDF exports, and signatures as different controls. LibreOffice Help documents automatic backup-copy settings and warns that normal Save overwrites the current path and name. Use versioned filenames or managed version history for important work, then test restoration. PDF export has separate range, image, form, link, security, and digital-signature options; review them for the destination instead of treating every PDF as equivalent. A valid digital signature shows that signed content has not changed under the validated certificate, but official help warns that it does not by itself prove the human identity or make the document trustworthy.
- Troubleshoot by separating package, user profile, extension, Java, document, font, printer, and storage layers. Record the LibreOffice version, channel, operating system, architecture, first failing file or action, extension changes, and exact message. Help > Restart in Troubleshoot Mode uses a temporary profile and disables hardware acceleration, allowing narrower checks before reset. Try a copied non-sensitive document and disable recent extensions first; preserve the real profile, templates, dictionaries, macros, and files before applying profile restoration or factory settings, because a clean profile cannot recover an overwritten document.
Cautions and operating tips
- LibreOffice 26.8.0 was displayed as the latest stable release on September 28, 2026, while 26.2.6 remained selectable. Do not freeze either number into a permanent deployment instruction. Re-check the official download page, supported operating systems, package architecture, release channel, language needs, and organization approval immediately before installation.
- The official Linux guidance favors the package method recommended by the distribution for ordinary use because integration and update ownership matter. A distribution package, TDF DEB or RPM, Flatpak, Snap, or another channel can differ in release timing, sandbox access, fonts, Java discovery, extensions, and support owner. Record one approved channel and avoid mixing packages while diagnosing a problem.
- Microsoft-format compatibility is a workflow test, not a yes-or-no badge. A DOCX can open while page breaks, substitute fonts, anchored objects, references, form controls, or tracked changes differ; an XLSX can preserve values while formulas, external links, pivot behavior, or macros need review. Use representative files, preserve originals, compare rendered output, and keep the recipient's application in the acceptance loop.
- Macros can read or change documents and may invoke external resources. A familiar invoice, spreadsheet, or signed file can still contain unexpected automation. Verify the sender through a trusted channel, inspect the business need, use the configured security level and trusted-source policy, and test in a controlled copy. Never lower security globally or create a broad trusted folder for one urgent attachment.
- Extension scope affects every user on a device. A shared extension requires administrative control and can be harder for an ordinary user to remove, while a per-user extension follows that profile. Keep an inventory of OXT source, version, scope, license, permissions, update check, and uninstall owner; isolate a newly added extension first when startup, menus, document loading, or export behavior changes.
- Troubleshoot Mode is evidence, not an automatic reset command. If the application works with a temporary profile, compare extensions, hardware acceleration, settings, and recent changes. Use the least radical restoration option first, and keep a separate copy of the original profile. The official page warns that an archived profile can contain sensitive dictionaries, settings, and installed-extension information, so review and minimize it before support sharing.
- Java should be installed only for a named LibreOffice feature that needs it. Match 64-bit Java with 64-bit LibreOffice or 32-bit Java with a 32-bit office build, use an approved Java vendor and update process, and restart LibreOffice after changing the selected runtime when required. Java availability does not repair malformed databases, missing drivers, permissions, or incompatible extensions by itself.
- PDF export can preserve layout for review but can also include links, form fields, bookmarks, metadata, attachments, comments, hidden content, or a digital signature depending on the source and options. Open the final PDF in a separate maintained viewer, test links and forms, inspect document properties, and confirm accessibility, redaction, security, and archival requirements before distribution.
- Digital-signature status requires interpretation. LibreOffice Help distinguishes a valid signature, an unvalidated certificate, partially signed content, and an invalid signature, and notes specific OOXML limitations. Verify certificate identity and trust chain through an approved route; do not treat a green status icon as proof that the sender, business request, macros, external links, or payment instructions are legitimate.
- Alternatives solve different operating constraints. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors may suit teams prioritizing OOXML collaboration; Microsoft 365 may be required for native Office automation and managed cloud workflows; OpenOffice or FreeOffice may fit narrower offline needs. Compare format fidelity, macros, accessibility, updates, support, collaboration, privacy, licensing, deployment, and exit options with real sample files instead of installing several suites as interchangeable backups.
- AppVeriq Guide does not host, mirror, modify, or redistribute LibreOffice installers, language packs, offline help, extensions, Java runtimes, templates, documents, or PDFs. Complete downloads through libreoffice.org, project-linked infrastructure, or an organization-approved operating-system package source whose owner and update path are documented.

Common scenarios
FAQ
Where should I download LibreOffice?
Start at libreoffice.org/download and choose the maintained release, operating system, architecture, language, and package type shown there. On Linux, the project recommends the distribution's installation method for ordinary use. AppVeriq Guide does not provide packages.
What LibreOffice version was current when this guide was checked?
The official page displayed LibreOffice 26.8.0 as latest stable on September 28, 2026 and also offered 26.2.6. Re-check the live page because release numbers, maintenance status, and platform packages change.
Does LibreOffice require Java?
Not for most work. The official requirements identify certain features, notably Base, as Java-dependent. When needed, use an approved JRE whose architecture matches LibreOffice and troubleshoot the named feature rather than installing a generic runtime bundle.
Will DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX look exactly the same?
Not automatically. LibreOffice can open and save Microsoft formats, but fonts, layout, fields, formulas, objects, tracked changes, and macros can differ. Preserve originals and test representative files in the recipient's application before replacing a workflow.
Are LibreOffice extensions safe?
An official extension route improves provenance but is not a blanket guarantee. OXT packages can include compiled components and libraries. Verify publisher, version compatibility, scope, license, permissions, updates, and removal, then test with a copied non-sensitive document.
Should I disable macro security to open a trusted-looking file?
No. Verify the sender and purpose through a trusted channel, inspect the macro need, and use the existing security and trusted-source policy. A familiar filename, company logo, or digital signature does not make every macro or external link safe.
What does Troubleshoot Mode change?
It temporarily starts LibreOffice with a new profile and disabled hardware acceleration, then offers progressively broader restoration choices. Preserve the original profile and start with the narrowest option; reset cannot recover overwritten documents.
Does a valid digital signature prove a document request is legitimate?
No. It helps show whether signed content changed under the validated certificate, but LibreOffice warns that certificate identity and legal trust still require independent verification. Review macros, links, payment instructions, and sender context separately.
Can I delete the original after exporting PDF or another format?
Not until the source, exported file, destination rendering, links, forms, fonts, comments, accessibility, signature, and retention requirements are verified. Keep a recoverable editable master and apply the organization's documented backup and deletion policy.
